The blog format diminishes the urge to be accurate. I&#8217;m doing my best to ignore the former and oppose the latter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2022.08.01.B: The closest thing I can think of to the medieval equivalent of a blog post is the papal encyclical. It&#8217;s hard to think of human civilization without some form of each of the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>person-to-person comms (the letter, the DM)<\/li><li>person-to-group comms (the blog post, the group chat)<\/li><li>group-to-group comms (international sporting events, war)<\/li><li>group-to-person comms (this one&#8217;s tough; probably something like &#8220;social norms&#8221;)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>2022.08.01.C: There is at least one important difference between a blog post and a social media post. A social media post has as its imagined target a small group of people contemporaries. A blog post has an eye towards an indefinite, arbitrarily-sized public in either the present or the distant future. I&#8217;m also sure they&#8217;re wrong. Conversely, I&#8217;m sure there are smart people who think the prevalence of video apps is killing human ability to compose in text format. I share their emotional fear, but in the cold morning air I think they&#8217;re wrong for the same reasons that we&#8217;re still using bowls after 20,000 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.1218643\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"614\" height=\"378\" src=\"https:\/\/crmatheny.net\/board\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-367\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crmatheny.net\/board\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-1.png 614w, https:\/\/crmatheny.net\/board\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image-1-300x185.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px\" \/><\/a><figcaption><a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.1218643\">Xianrendong Cave pottery<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>2022:08.01.E: Square dancing exists today mostly as an ossified traditional practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Modern Square Dancing Example of movements taught and danced\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ONsagVzt19U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>(That many of our current musical forms are in the process of becoming ossified practices like this is something to be discussed another time.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Contrast this with the murga:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Murga Argentina Carnival Of Buenos Aires\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/j7bzuPdJ9Vo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The differences between square dance and murga are obvious:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>the age of the performers and the probably-consequent vigor of the movements<\/li><li>the presence of a narrative in murga in contrast to mathematical permutation play in square dancing.<\/li><li>the comparatively recent origin of murga<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>2022.08.01.F: A brief list of current group-level cultural production which shows murga-like signs of life as opposed to ossified practices like square dancing (NOTE: no one should rule out a square dancing revival! Living cultures routinely mine and repurposes traditional forms, and sqaure dancing shows some signs of being ripe for this. Note similarity with some practices below.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Drum Klub<br>&#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drum-klub.net\/\">http:\/\/www.drum-klub.net\/<\/a><br>&#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CfwpMiYIXoL\/\">https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CfwpMiYIXoL\/<\/a><\/li><li>Sacred Harp Berlin<br>&#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sacredharpberlin.de\/\">https:\/\/www.sacredharpberlin.de\/<\/a><\/li><li>Bulgarian Voices Berlin<br>&#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/bulgarianvoices\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/bulgarianvoices<\/a><\/li><li>Bluegrass jams (kind of an edge case but with the recent subcultural popularity of bands like <a href=\"https:\/\/bigthief.bandcamp.com\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/bigthief.bandcamp.com\/\">Big Thief<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/pinegrove.bandcamp.com\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/pinegrove.bandcamp.com\/\">Pinegrove<\/a> I&#8217;ll include it):<br>&#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coloradobluegrass.org\/jams\">https:\/\/www.coloradobluegrass.org\/jams<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Other tradition-informed but living group cultural practices exist. Common thread: in these practices individualism is on the back burner. A group takes the forefront, either as the source of a narrative or a necessary co-creator of the work or both.<strong> This is not a threat to individual expression; on the contrary, it provides more material for people with neoromantic tendencies to work with.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2022.08.01.H: Neolithic poetry almost certainly existed. We are unlikely to ever hear it. This is an incalculable complication in the effort to understand the nature of consciousness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2022.08.01.I: Contemporary people (like me above) use the word &#8220;consciousness&#8221; precisely where previous generations would have used the word &#8220;the soul.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>2022.08.01.A: The blog format amplifies the urge to be coherent and humorous.
